Friendly Fires + The Futureheads = UK Rock Pop

SO, I like the Friendly Fires record, it's pretty poppy and produced but hey, it's gets in my head and I don't mind it. I am going to see them at Spaceland on December 7th. It's a pretty small venue for a band that is getting some major attention, should be fun.

The Futureheads are solid in my book. I really liked the first album, I have not heard much of their newest album but the tracks I have heard sound pretty good. It's just UK rock-n-roll to me.

Friendly Fires: "Paris"

The Futureheads: "Walking Backwards"

Don't forget cLAy TV's first show! I know you won't.

Maniqui Lazer: "Sonic Sex" (This is by far their most poppy song, they get nuts!)

Have a great T-Day yall'!!!
My Computer Status: Still 1 week unitl I get it back. DAMN!!

The Hold Steady and Fucked Up have good 08' albums.

SO, The Hold Steady are good. They are one of a kind, there is no mistaken when you hear one of their songs. They are just classic sounding, like John Cougar Melloncamp or something. Their album from this year is pretty damn good. I also like them because some of them are from my home state of MN. Here is also a video from Canada's Fucked Up who released one of my fav albums of this year. This video has the dude from Vampire Weekend in it singing when Fucked Up did that 12 hour long show in NYC.

The Hold Steady: "Stay Positive"

Fucked Up [ft. Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend]: "Someone’s Gonna Die Tonight" (Blitz cover) / “Parents” (Descendents cover) (live in New York)

My computer will be done tomorrow, this is a quick one too. I am proud of myself actually that I have been able to post while my computer was in the shop, aren't you?

Fright Bite and White Denim are from Texas

SO, here is another quick post, my computer is down until Wednesday. It is nutty how many little things you can get done when you don't have a computer or cable. Really productive.

Two videos from Texas

Fight Bite with a lovely little dreamy song.
Fight Bite: "Swissex Lover"

White Denim with some jammy jams in the Fader offices.
White Denim: "Migration Wind"

Sigur Ros and Radiohead are big bands....

SO, Sigur Ros has one of my favorite albums this year, it's good stuff in a year that had a lot of mediocre stuff. This song is not on that album, it's on Takk but this is a new video and it is pretty damn good.

And, I have fallen off the Radiohead bandwagon in the last years, I think Kid A was the last one a had, it just seems like a lot of the same to me but they have neat videos, here's one.

My computer is in the shop still. This is a quicky post from my wife's computer. Toodles.

ps Some pics from our show last night are here, but none of them are of the actual show just the people. That guy was too busy getting pics of himself with girls I guess. The show was rad though, thanks everybody for coming out. It was super fun! I've never seen that many people dancing and getting nuts to our songs before, yeeee hawww!

Jay Reatard and the future of shit.

SO, Mr. Jay Reatard's last album from 07' still gets constant play on my end. I also like his 7"s. This is the first official video they have put out though, took long enough. I really wish good bands would start putting out videos more so I wouldn't have to post some of the shit that I barely like. This is a fun video and a great song.

Jay Reatard: "See/Saw"

and....

who da hell are these bands? I swear I have never felt older watching this shit. Wierd. It's like emo, dance, punk and mashed up in some kind of teenage goulash that tastes like shit. Man, I mean Myley Cyrus and all that I can understand because of it's pop nature but this, man, this is like a Halloween party where everyone dresses up like their favorite rock star and pretends to play like them but fail miserably. It's almost embarrassing. Or, I am getting old and lame, noooooooooooooooo, fuck that. I rock!

Let me smell your bowl of fruit: Lesser Gonzalez Alvarez

SO, here is one that my friend Ryan sent me. It's makes me laugh at their seemingly blatant sincerity regarding the lyric. Anyway, watch it through, it's great, thanks Ryan.

Second is a Lesser Gonzalez Alvarez with a strangely compelling video. Watch for yourself. It's a pretty good song too. Not too sure about the flag thing, may have been fine in the Bush era, but in the Obama era I am a bit more patriotic, what can I say, it's a gut thing.

Let Me Smell Yo Dick - Riskay Featuring Aviance (click here after watching "The Letter B" video to see this shit)

Lesser Gonzalez Alvarez: The Letter B

Deerhoof and My Brightest Diamond

SO, Deerhoof is fun and good right? Everyone likes them right? I do too right? I have seen them once in like 2004, they were awesome right? I put their last album on my top albums of 07' right? I think so. My Brightest Diamond is good too right? Mmmmm, kinda. Not huge on it but this seems ok, I guess right? Video is ok and stuff right? They are in LA 11/26 right? Man, what a lame post this is right?

Deerhoof: "Offend Maggie"

My Brightest Diamond "Inside a Boy"

Army Navy and Little Joy

SO, Army Navy have a new video featuring Human Giant's Paul Scheer. It's funny. I am not in love with this band but it's poppy enough to enjoy.

Little Joy is a new band from down the street. They named their band after a little dive bar in Echo Park. They have cheap PBR there. The band also has Fabrizio from The Strokes, who I just saw at Mexico City Restaurant, playing guitar and singing, but for some reason he seems to be the least important part of the band. Maybe he should stick to just being the drummer. I think the other two added him to get some name recognition goin' on. Anyway, check it. It ain't so bad.

Army Navy

Little Joy: "Unattainable"

Keex from PRE is a rock star.

SO, Michael from Videothing went to see one of my favorite bands PRE at CMJ recently. Thier lead singer's nickname is Keex, she fucking slays live. Check out this footage of her lettin' it all hang out. FUCK YEAH!

ps sorry about the lack of posts. busy busy busy.

Titus Andronicus and Why? = Plenty of Spins.

SO, these two have been on constant rotation on my ipod this year. They are both pretty damn solid albums. Here are two videos from them. See Titus Andronicus on 12/2 with No Age at The Troubadour.

Titus Andronicus: "Titus Andronicus"

Why?: "A Sky For Shoeing Horses Under"

Nihon No Ongaku: Nihonjin No Onnanohito: Midori Hirano and Mutyumu

SO, here are two from Japan. If you have been around cLAy TV for a while you know I like to post Japanese music from time to time. If you search "Nihon No Ongaku" in the search bar a bunch will come up. I lived in Tokyo for a while and played in a band there too. There is great and sometimes strange shit that comes out of there, as you probably already know. The title of this post translated is Japanese Music: Japanese Women. I came across these two acts, both female fronted. First we have Midori Hirano. She lives in Berlin and is a classically trained pianist. It's ambient stuff with interesting layers of piano, electronics and strings. It's good for chilling out. I just got her new one, Kio Yuri, smart and really good. Second we have another girl fronted band Mutyumu. Piano again is the main instrument. Theses guys are a bit too operatic for me, especially the singer, but they bust into some full-on heavy screaming madness sometimes, which I can dig.

Midori Hirano: "Feathers"

Mutyumu: "L'œil est Dieu"

Marnie Stern rips on guitar and is goofy.

SO, man, I seem to have little to no time for these lately. Here is a Marnie Stern video, her new album is pretty damn good. This video shows an adorable side of her that I haven't seen before. Goofy. She will be in LA on Saturday with Gang Gang Dance.

Marnie Stern: "Ruler"

busy classic drunkard...

drunk, busy. here a is video. watch and remember. heard this song quite a bit lately, it's good.

Nihon No Ongaku: Corrupted son de Japón.

SO, on Friday I went to the Regent theater (aka the new safari sams) which is an old gutted out theater in the heart of downtown. It's an exciting new place to see shows. It feels as if you've left LA and landed in NYC or Chicago to see a show. The night was especially unique in that I went to see the the elusive doom/gloom/sludge/ambient metal band from Osaka, Japan called Corrupted. The crowd was unlike any crowd you see in LA, full oh crusty, bearded, beer drinking, tattooed, smart metal heads with good looking girlfriends. It felt like the pacific northwest. Now for the show, Corrupted is legendary in this genre and now I know why; they were absolutely mesmerizing. They played one song for about 50 minutes that included two massive builds, starting from minimal post-rock guitars to massive swells that hit you like ton of bricks. A massive wall of sound created by two guitars, bass, drums and the singer, Hevi, fucking screaming at a tone that you can't imagine. He sounds like another instrument with his powerful harsh guttural grunts and they are sung in Spanish! They were so precise, professional and slow. They have been described as "some of the heaviest, gloomiest doom/sludge around, distinctly cacophonous, layering feedback pulverizing progressions into a distinctly cacophonous rumble." Yeah, that sounds right. They made the hairs stand up on my neck. Now, at this point I would show you a video, but as I said they are elusive, not doing and videos, interviews, photo shoots or any self promotion. So I will leave it at that. Go see them if they come to your town, but it's not likely you will since this was the first time had been to the states in 11 years.

Rainbow Arabia + Buraka Som Sistema = Watch Out World!

SO, hailing from the neighborhood next to mine, Echo Park Rainbow Arabia made a fucking rad video. I totally dig this. I just got their EP and it rips, super good. They fit right into the world/indie scene that is oh so happenin' these days. Keeping on the world music tip here is video by Buraka Som Sistema. This video features M.I.A. who was the one who really got the world thing goin'. With these two, The Very Best, El Guincho and countless others this new genre is getting pretty damn hot.
(El Guincho at The Echo 11/20 and Rainbow Arabia at The Echo as well on 12/01)

Rainbow Arabia: "Let Them Dance"

Buraka Som Sistema ft M.I.A.: "Sound of Kuduro"

USA Hipsters, Megapuss, Designer Drugs is LA

SO, there is a reason for these videos. There was a crowd of Silverlakers on the corner next to my house last night chanting USA, Megapuss shot this video just down the street at Melrose and Heliotrope AKA Bike Town, and Halloween just finished, hence IHEARTCOMIX's dudes Designer Drugs doing"Zombies". They all are LA related. Wow, I am good.

USA USA USA on the corner of Sanborn and Sunset. (Thanks Shovel!)

Megapuss (with Devandra Banhart, Fabrizio from Strokes and Greg from Priestbird. The video is funny the songs blows. I thought is was neat that they filmed it just down the way)

Friendly Fires and Shinichi Osawa

So, these two are creating some good buzz lately. Friendly Fires just played the tonight with Lykke Li in LA, it's sold out. Not a huge fan but I can see how people can get into them for sure. I have the album, it's indie niceness. (BTW, search cLAy TV for Lykke Li and there is a video of her jammin with Bon Iver, it's sooo goooood, they oooze talent man) Second is the newest addition to the Dim Mak family, straight from my home away from home, Tokyo, it's Shinichi Osawa. He can mix the shit out songs, listen.

Friendly Fires: "Jump In The Pool"

Shinichi Osawa: "Star Guitar" (Chemical Brothers Remix)

Shinichi Osawa: "Detonator" (CSS Remix)

OH AND: GO OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!

James Pants and Starfucker are from Oregon.

SO, I know nothing of these two. They seem fine to me, we'll see if they seem fine to you. James Pants has a funny name and has funny videos. Starfucker have a funny name too. Here is a video of theirs. They will be at Spaceland on November 8th. Both of them are from Oregon. Now you and I know something of these two. Enjoy.

James Pants: "We're Through"
