SO, went to see Bad Parents, Mika Miko, and Jay Reatard tonight at the All Star Lanes in Eagle Rock. They are from the LBC, LA, and Memphis respectively. It was a packed house. I caught just the tail end of Bad Parents, they are rad though. Then Mika Miko, the crowd was a little stiff but hey it's a Monday night. I love them no matter what though, super energy, super fun, super punk rock spirit. Jay Reatard brought the house down. Got a pit going and shit. My buddy Preston got in the mix, it was like old times. I played the cool guy and just bobbed my head up and down. It was rowdy though! They just signed to Matador to do some 7"s. Watch for em' because they are great. OK, here are some videos and pics. Yes?
Mika Miko
Mika Miko: "Business Cats"
Jay Reatard
Jay Reatard: "My Family" (Some crazy dude named Mike Long dancing in front of his grandparets)
SO, this is a new section that I will do from time to time that will feature LA music videos. The first is the almighty HEALTH. They are super rad and I love them. It's a live video they did recently, it's cool. The second is Pink Enemy, they are dancy goodness, like an 80's Test Icicles. The third is Blu and Exile, check out the local spots, I don't do too much hip-hop on cLAy TV! but I am a fan the hip-hop. It's a cool song too.
SO, there is definitely a theme to this one today, it's food. The first is a fan video for Justice's Phantom Pt. II. It's the actual food doing the fighting. The other one is the people throwing the food at other people, like the old school kind of food fight by Be Your Own Pet.
SO, here are two to watch for, Pete and The Pirates from the Reading, UK, and Jay Reatard from Memphis. They have funny names sure but whoa! they are both great! Go to their myspace pages (by clicking on their names) and listen, really good. I expect to here way more from these guys in 08'. Here are two videos from them. Hey LA, Jay Reatard is at All Star Lanes in Eagle Rock on Monday with Mika Miko! Yay! He is also at the Wiltern with Black Keys on the 1st.
SO, I have some dedicated listeners that mailed me last time I had a Familjen video on the channel and the same for an Ida Maria video. So these are dedicated to you my faithful watchers. Oh, and here is one for the masses. My buddy Jay sent it to me. It's a 10 year-old Japanese girl playing Kansas's hit "Carry On Wayward Son". Yes, it's all her too. Great!
Familjen: "Huvudet i sanden"
Ida Maria: "Stella" (a great story of giving a 40 year old hooker the night of her life!)
SO, here is a head trip, grab your 3D glasses you got laying around and watch MGMT's "Time to Pretend" in 3D! If you don't have any, well, then try buying that colored saran wrap and make some. Here is a new band from Germany too, 1000 Robota, they get it man, they get it. Sprechen sie deutsch?
SO, I just got the new Why? album, "Alopecia". I like it. They are smart, a non-genre kind of band, like Ween I guess, they cross over and do whatever music comes to mind. Here is a new video from them. The dudes from Family Guy and American Dad did it. Those guys would totally be in their kind of demographic, slightly nerdy, smart, creative cool dude music. Next is a video that got sent to me. It's by this nutty band called Soophie Nun Squad. They are greatly funny and should be together still because they are rad. They are like a Smell band but from Little Rock. Watch it and do the Cinderblock, the crowd sure does!
SO, watch the part when he kicks it and when it's on ice. "BigDog is the alpha male of the Boston Dynamics family of robots. It is a quadruped robot that walks, runs, and climbs on rough terrain and carries heavy loads. BigDog is powered by a gasoline engine that drives a hydraulic actuation system. BigDog's legs are articulated like an animal’s, and have compliant elements that absorb shock and recycle energy from one step to the next. BigDog is the size of a large dog or small mule, measuring 1 meter long, 0.7 meters tall and 75 kg weight."
SO, this is something I do every now and again due to my interest in Japanese undergroud music. Check out these two, two piece Japanese girl bands. They are so rad. Thought I would share them with you. Afrirampo (see past posts on them) and Kiiiiiii. Wow! Cute and nuts, I love it! I own Afrirampo's Kore Ga Mayaku Da (garage/experimental/abrasive) and Suuto Breakor (dreamy/ambient/experimentl) and Kiiiiiii's self titled.
SO, I'm not really a big fan of these bands but they made fun videos. So, if you like fun, and you are in the mood to have some fun, watch these fun ass videos. Fun. Not just plain old fun either, global fun, yes people, get with it, GLOBAL FUN! ps the songs are not all that bad though either!
SO, I am drunk right now but just saw Evangelicals at The Silverlake Lounge. They ruled it. SO good. Buy the album or steal it or something. It's good. Not ALOT of people there though, not sure why, still underground a bit I guess, soon, soon, they will be big.
SO, this 80's craze has not yet left the building, I think this summer it will even be more 80's, I may even bust out some short shorts. These two bands are keepin' it alive. Foals from the UK and Ladyhawke from Wellington/Sydney/London/New Zealand, she must be a wanderer, flyin around like the hawke she is. They are cool songs though! Check it.
SO, here is a new video from Modest Mouse and one from Neon Neon. I hope you like. Since Modest Mouse debuted at #1 on Billboard I guess they can crank out spendy videos. Oh, and Neon Neon is a bit produced and 80's sounding for me but likeable I guess, kinda like The Killers are, right? Their new one is full of 80's inspired pop. I got it, it's kinda fun. They got a lot of buzz now, but don't believe the hype. It's just ok. See for youself.
So, I am lazy to look for videos. Been going out a lot lately. So, I'm keep em' short and sweet. Went to a Gen Art party last night, free booze. My buddies from Costa Mesa came up and my friend from Tokyo was in town. Here is a picture of us. Bye.
my two cents: There needs to be a new SXSW style event in the next coming years, it's too nuts now, I think my mom is even going.
Thanks to Duke at You Set The Scene for getting me on the list to see Big Business play last night at Spaceland. It was a rad show, totally packed. The two dudes play in The Melvins now too. The Cops and Red Fang opened. Didn't see The Cops but Red Fang was great, totally heavy and fun to watch. The drummer from Red Fang played some snare with Coday (ex Murder City Devils) from Big Business on the first song. I talked to him about it after the show, he said it was a one time deal, but it flew nicely. Big Business was their good old selves, being a drummer I watch Coday kill the drums, actually so does everyone else. He rules it. So here is a video and some pics. My buddy from Japan is here so no post tmrw, probably.
SO, Vampire Weekend played SNL last night, here is A-Punk. Their show at The El Rey here in LA sold out fast, I might pull some strings to get in, or not. They are getting so huge. It's like The Strokes, Franz Fernidad, The Vines, etc..., huge then mediocre (I like The Strokes though but I can't even listen to Franz). Second, is Clinic. They are back with a new album and a new video. They are good. I own their album "Walking With Trees". See them live. They are at The Troubadour on May 20th.
SO, here are two videos that are funny as hell, and just plain weird. Watch em' and laugh. I am still hungover from yesterday so that is all I have to say today.
SO, this is the 100th post. Things are going well here on the channel. I would like to thank In Flight at Night and You Set The Scene for helping me out, also Elliot for being the man behind the scenes working on the logo and general web stuff. Thanks to everyone that has been coming here each day, it's makes me want to do better. cLAy TV! has spanned the globe, hitting up every continent, except Antarctica, and hitting over 50 countries! Yay. SO, thanks.
SO, yeah. Got drunk last night. Went to Dim Mak's night at The Room and headed over to Tiny's to eat mini-pizzas and drink cheap beer. It was just me and my little lady. Good times. That's why no post yesterday, wasn't even home until late, then passed out. Today I feel like listening to the album, For Emma Forever Ago by Wisconsin's own, Bon Iver. It's really good. I haven't been listening to much mellow stuff lately but this is on regular rotation and good for the hangover.
SO, here are three videos that are not to impress anyone, or to win any award. They are here to show you...well, that anyone can make a video these days. You can make a fan video and send to to your favorite band, often times they love it and it gets tons of hits or just record a live show, put it on the net and tons of people see it. Some of my favorite videos of 07' (see the post on my top vids of 07')were fan videos actually. The first is by Ponytail from Baltimore. It's got random footage, but it works somehow. Second is from TPF! (my band). It's a really bootleg style, shitty video that goes with the lyrics...slightly. I made it in about a minute and it shows. Third is just plain old live footage of Rick Froberg's new band Obits. He was in Hot Snakes and Drive Like Jehu, two of the best bands ever! Without further adu:
SO, Archers of Loaf are one of my all time favorite bands ever. Great, great, great. One of the best moments of my band career was getting to open for these guys in Fargo on their Speed of Cattle tour. I was in a band called The Women, to date still probably the most creative band I was ever in. Archers have been broken up for a while now but Eric Bachman still does a ton of stuff, like Crooked Fingers and a solo thing. I actually chatted with him for a while when I saw Crooked Fingers last and he remembered The Women, at least he said he did. Anyway, I am featuring them today because they are one of those bands who were popular when MTV didn't play many indie/punk videos, except for 120 minutes and Alternative Nation, and the internet wasn't too happenin' yet. So here is your first chance to see some of their videos, they are nothing spectacular , but the songs, well...are timeless classics. Oh, on a side note, Crystal Castles are not playing their LA show next Sunday at the Roxy because Alice broke two ribs in a car accident. I am bumbed as hell, but HEALTH is still playing, so that's rad.
SO, I am a member of this BMX gang from Fargo,ND called Fargo Street Hawks. It started in the mid 90's and has grown to be an institution for those who are rad. I am part of the LA chapter and we generally represent Fairfax/Melrose districts as well as Silverlake. Most Hawks sport tats symbolizing their devotion and honor to being a Hawk. The ones that don't have a tat have the Hawk essence burning in their soul. To be a member you just simply have to ride with us and understand what it takes, it's inherent really. If you haven't seen it yet, there is documentary that came out long ago about us done by Kyja Kristjansson-Nelson(she is the girl by the tree on the right). It's a documentary following the BMX bikers, Fargo Street Hawks. "They struggle with their hardened identity as a gang, the Street Hawks talk of life, love and ridin', while turmoil erupts between their rival gang." The music is mostly done by Fargo's own, Seawhores. Here is the video, watch and learn. Kawww Kawww!!
SO, here are three sweet videos from Justice (man, they can do no wrong), Kanye West (it's not by him but it's damn creative) and kap10kurt (rad rad rad).
